Stress Echocardiogram (Echo)

This test combines the use of ultrasound with exercise on a treadmill. A microphone-like device is held against your chest. The ultrasound waves it produces reflect off various parts of your heart and create a picture on a video screen. Your doctor will compare images of your heart recorded before and after you exercise to determine if you have decreased blood flow to your heart. If you are unable to walk on a treadmill, a medication (dobutamine) is used to increase your heart rate. This method is often used for women who may have trouble reaching their target heart rate on a treadmill.
